Department of Ophthalmology was established in 2022 and it’s Mission is to provide Comprehensive eye care for all common eye diseases.

The out patient services are placed in the second floor of the Main hospital block and wards are located in the fourth floor. The department of Ophthalmology has a state of the art Operation Theatre and provides surgical services including Cataract, Glaucoma, Cornea, Lid disorders. The department has dedicated faculty who play an active role in the implementation of National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCBV) and Community Outreach programs in Ariyalur district.

The Ophthalmology Department was started in the year 2021 in the 2th floor of hospital block, Government Medical College, Ariyalur. The mission of the ophthalmology Department is to promote quality of vision and reduce the prevalence of blindness in our district and values based education by motivating the practical skills of students and create awareness on the recent advances in ophthalmology

Academic activities:

Competency-based Undergraduate curriculum (CBME) is followed for the MBBS students

Teaching evidence-based ophthalmology

Providing knowledge and clinical skills to become professionals

Direct observation of surgical procedures in ophthalmology

Developing leadership skills in the CBME graduates in India.

Continuous and frequent formative assessment

Mini clinical evaluation exercises

Records of clinical work and exposure, such as log books and portfolios.

Teaching the students to handle the patients with compassion

  1. OPD Cases around 100 per day
  2. Refraction

  6. Minor operative procedures done in minor OT

Laser treatment:

  1. NdYAG Capsulotomy for PCO
  2. NdYAG Peripheral Iridotomy
  3. Green laser for Diabetic retinopathy

  • ROP screening for newborns
  • PIH screening for pregnant women

Cornea clinic:to treat corneal disorders

Glaucoma clinic:screening for increasing IOP
