✔  The Department of Community Medicine is functioning since the existence of Government Medical College, Ariyalur. The Department is located in sixth floor of faculty block. The Department of Community Medicine plays a pivotal role in medical education by training future doctors in public health principles, preventive medicine, epidemiology, and health promotion. Our goal is to create socially responsible, community-oriented medical professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to address public health challenges at the individual, family, and community levels.

✔  The department is actively involved in teaching undergraduate students, conducting community-based research, implementing national health programs, and providing preventive and promotive health services through urban and rural health training facilities.


VISION:

The department of Community Medicine envisions achieving the standards of excellence in education of undergraduates.


OBJECTIVES:

  • Toidentify and recognize the physical, social, psychological, environmental and economic determinants of health and disease.
  • To make a community diagnosis by applying the knowledge of epidemiology in identifying, prioritizing and preventing common public health problems at individual, family and community level and managing public health emergencies thereby functioning as a community and first contact physician
  • To develop leadership qualities for a primary care health team.
  • To teach them the research principles and methodologies and to orient the students in scientific presentations and publication.

✔  The department provides a range of academic, research, and community health services:


Academic Services:

  • Teaching and training for MBBS undergraduate students (1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year)
  • Training for interns (CRMI)
  • Workshops and skill sessions on epidemiology, biostatistics, family health, environmental health, and research methodology.

Community Health Services:

  • Preventive and promotive health services through UHTC and RHTC
  • School health programs
  • Maternal and child health services
  • Immunization activities
  • Vector control and sanitation awareness initiatives
  • Health camp organization in collaboration with government programs

Public Health Program Implementation:

  • Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (MTM) –NCD ClinicDepartment of Community Medicine is nodal department for MTM clinic (OPD No-8) in Govt Ariyalur Medical College Hospital, where we are providing non communicable disease screening and follow-up.
  • Our department has been involved in Organised Cancer Screening (OCS) Pilot study (TNNCD) under JICA-TNHSP(Japan International Cooperation Agency- Tamilnadu Health System Project)
  • Support for national programs such as NTEP, NVBDCP, NPCDCS, RMNCAH+N, IDSP, and others
  • Surveillance and outbreak investigation assistance to district health authorities
  • Health awareness and IEC/BCC activities for the community.

Family Adoption Programme:

Family Adoption Programme has been introduced and included as a part of MBBS curriculum where it is requires for each medical student to adopt around 5 families in rural area with the objective of developing communication skills with the adopted families.

In addition students will understand the dynamics of rural set up in health, identifying any diseases or health conditions and guiding the families in case of health needs

Third professional Part I MBBS 21 Hours over 5 visits

CRMI:

The CRMI’s are posted for about 3 months in the department of Community Medicine. They are posted in Rural field practice area ,urban field practice area , Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam clinic. Their activities are periodically reviewed by the faculties.
